Bensalem LANAP®: The Laser Alternative to Gum Surgery

Our doctors are among the few, leading-edge periodontists in the region to offer patients the LANAP® gum disease treatment procedure.

The PerioLase MVP-7 Laser is the only FDA approved laser to treat gum disease with the Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure (LANAP®).  This is a minimally invasive periodontal procedure like no other with a pulsing laser which is absorbed by infected and inflamed tissue.  The diseased tissue and bacteria which have a darker pigment than healthy tissue are “zapped” away by the laser, leaving behind only healthy gum tissue.  LANAP® then helps connective tissue and bone form between the gums and teeth.

Additional Benefits

The benefits of LANAP® include less pain, less gum recession, decreased bleeding, swelling and root sensitivity and less downtime after treatment. Controlling periodontal disease with LANAP® makes it possible to save and restore otherwise hopeless teeth.

Laser treatment is also beneficial for patients who have medical problems requiring medications such as aspirin, Plavix and Coumadin.  Since LANAP® causes much less bleeding than traditional surgeries; patients do not have to discontinue using these drugs prior to surgery.

Patients with advanced periodontal disease who take bisphosphonates, such as Fosamax, can avoid extractions that can lead to osteonecrosis of the jaw since teeth with a poor prognosis can now often be saved by treatment with the new laser. LANAP® is also safe for patients with HIV, hemophilia or diabetes.

Additionally, a modification of the LANAP® procedure can be used to treat infections around implants. This procedure, LAPIP® (Laser Assisted Peri-Implantitis Procedure), like LANAP®, targets removing the infection and helps to regrow bone.

LANAP® laser gum disease treatment is an easier, gentler way to get healthier gums. One session usually takes about two hours and requires only some local anesthetic. Plus, most patients are able to resume regular activity the very same day – without any pain medication.
