September is Gum Care Month

September is designated as National Gum Care Month. It’s a great time to reflect on oral health and the importance of keeping your mouth healthy. Of course, when you’re a periodontal practice, every month is gum care month!  We’re always happy to have an excuse to remind our patients and their families of just how critical it is to maintain your tooth and gum health.

Studies show that there are numerous links between gum disease and many chronic illnesses such as heart disease, diabetes, some cancers and other inflammatory diseases. Other sobering oral health care facts:

  • Nearly 50% of adults in this country have some form of gum (periodontal) disease
  • Gum disease signs can include chronic bad breath, swollen or bleeding gums when brushing, sensitive teeth and receding gums
  • In its earliest stages, gum disease may not have any symptoms – another reason why you need to visit your dental practitioner every six months for professional cleaning by a licensed hygienist and examination by a dentist
  • Tobacco users are much more likely to develop advanced gum disease than non-smokers
  • If your parents had gum disease, you’re unfortunately more prone to it
  • Hormonal changes (like during pregnancy) can affect gum tissue
  • Some medications and conditions (like having diabetes) increase your risk of having gum disease. Even obesity can pose a risk factor since a body low on proper nutrients can compromise your immune system and leave you more susceptible to issues

Keeping Your Mouth Clean Can Save You Money

As mentioned, taking care of your teeth and gums will not only help you keep your natural teeth for life but help you keep healthy. That twice daily brushing (soft-bristled toothbrushes, please!), daily flossing and regular visits to your dental professionals can save you money in the long run. You can catch issues before they become irreversible, and save money by avoiding more expensive gum and teeth procedures or tooth replacement down the road.

If you are experiencing any issues, please make an appointment with one of our board-certified periodontists at either of our two practice locations at NE Philadelphia or Ambler, PA. Referrals are always welcomed, but are not required. Make today your starting point for a healthier you. We can reverse gingivitis (the earliest stage of gum disease), treat gum disease, save failing teeth and, if needed, provide you with a beautiful new smile with dental implants.

What are you waiting for? 😊
