A few years ago, research results from the Oral Health Foundation said that meeting someone with bad breath was (and most likely still is!) one of the top reasons people wouldn’t go on second dates. Not a great way of promoting romance, huh? But did you also know that bad breath could also be a sign of gum disease?
Even though a beautiful smile is one of the first things someone will notice about you, the CDC estimates that nearly ½ of all adults aged 30 or older don’t prioritize their oral health and have some form of gum (periodontal) disease. That percentage increases with age.
Also, tooth loss (because of untreated periodontal disease) can lead to poorer diets, difficulty speaking and a lower quality of life. Studies also point to the negative relationship between gum disease and systemic disease. It turns out that your mouth, the “gateway to your body” needs to be kept in good shape for more reasons than just second dates.
Treat Gum Disease Today
If caught early, gingivitis, the earliest form of periodontal disease, can be reversed with simple treatment. Moderate cases can be effectively treated with a variety of procedures to help you keep your mouth healthy and save your teeth. When the destruction from periodontal disease becomes advanced, you stand the risk of losing your natural teeth.
Transform Your Oral Health
Good oral hygiene is all about twice daily tooth brushing, flossing and seeing your dentist for six-month check-ups which include important cleaning. If you’ve been diagnosed with gum disease, you’ll probably also see a periodontist’s office like ours for deeper cleaning to reach above and below the gumline.
February isn’t the only month where romance is celebrated. And certainly not the only month where we at Pennsylvania Center for Dental Implants and Periodontics promote good oral hygiene.
For an appointment with one of our board-certified periodontists, call us today at either our NE Philadelphia or Ambler office. We offer the latest non-surgical and surgical treatments for all forms of gum disease, including scaling and root planing with antibiotics, LANAP® no-cut or sew laser surgery, Pinhole® gum rejuvenation for receding gums, and more.
Now’s the time to take care of your smile, help keep you healthy and maybe even help make romance blossom!
